In 2010 avant-garde jazz composer John Zorn released Dictée, a ritualistic homage to Cha. Zorn conceived the piece as a gut (굿), a traditional Korean shamanistic ritual. His tribute to Cha is an intricate composition involving four musicians playing various instruments with spoken word theatrics in French and Korean and atmospheric sound effects. His Dictée captures the emotional, spiritual and intellectual terrain of Cha’s life and art. Zorn’s “evocative postmodern tone poems,” have been described as “cinema for the ears”. We are very excited to announce that Zorn has come on board to score the music for the film.
Musicians Sylvie Courvoisier, Okkyung Lee, Ned Rothenberg, and Kenny Wollesen collaborated with Zorn on Dictée.
